Highlights Red Bulls vs. Eisbären Berlin
Game recap
The Red Bulls – whose injured bench was extended to six players today with Michael Raffl returning from the last ICE game in Székesfehérvár with a lower-body injury – got off to an ideal start. Connor Corcoran fired the home team into the lead early on the power play (4th minute), but Berlin goalie Jonas Stettmer had to let the puck through his pads. The equally weakened Berlin side immediately took on the fight, creating back-and-forth opportunities on both sides. On a power play, the visitors put the Red Bulls under pressure, barely letting them out of the defensive zone. Goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen saved two dangerous shots. Then the Red Bulls were back on the attack again, with Tyler Lewington shooting from a run (13th minute), Troy Bourke and Lucas Thaler going 2-on-1 (15th minute), and Brandon Coe briefly having the puck alone in front of the goalie (16th minute). The Red Bulls, who were generally more forceful, led 1-0 after 20 minutes.
The second period was a direct affair. Berlin's top scorer, Ty Ronning, was unable to capitalize on a solo effort (21'). Almost immediately afterward, Salzburg's Nash Nienhuis scored from a tight angle on the left (22'), and in the same minute, Lean Bergmann reduced the deficit to 1-2 for the visitors with a low shot (22'). Mario Huber then increased the lead to 3-1 in the fast-paced game, being set up by a picture-perfect pass from Florian Baltram (31'). This was followed by a goal from Peter Schneider, who was in the right place at the right post to receive a pass from Troy Bourke (32'). Berlin also had occasional chances, but Salzburg were now almost impossible to get out of the attacking zone and had further great opportunities. The second period clearly went to the Red Bulls, 4-1 after 40 minutes.
In the final period, the visitors initially tried to use a lot of pressure and good, hidden shots. The Red Bulls needed about four minutes for their first offensive action, then the game went back and forth again. During a good Berlin power play (starting in the 49th minute), Atte Tolvanen was unstoppable. The visitors continued to dominate the offensive, but the Red Bulls were also too determined defensively to jeopardize the win against the Berlin team, who remained dangerous until the very end. In the end, the Red Bulls celebrated a 4-1 victory over the German champions and thus qualified for the CHL playoffs in their final game.
