Game report
With the clear starting position that only a win or overtime would keep the Juniors in the race for the pre-playoffs, while Val Gardena could already qualify with an away win, an intense duel developed right from the start. The Red Bulls started with a lot of pressure and looked for the opening goal early on. Despite a high tempo and a lot of offensive presence, the young Salzburgers were unable to break through the well-organized defence of the South Tyroleans. Strong short-handed play initially kept the Juniors in the game, but it was Yuri Cristellon who put the visitors 1:0 ahead in the 17th minute.
The Juniors continued to set the pace in the second period, but were repeatedly thwarted by the visitors' disciplined defense and goalkeeper Paul Hofer. In the middle of the third period, the Red Bulls increasingly took control and pressed for the equalizer. Despite numerous shots, the decisive gap was missing for a long time until Niklas Korhonen made it 1:1 in the 36th minute after preparatory work by Philipp Wimmer.
The final period began with a high tempo on both sides. The Red Bulls created good chances until Philipp Wimmer gave the Juniors the lead for the first time in the 46th minute with a well-placed shot. However, the South Tyroleans responded and took advantage of a 4-on-4 situation in the 54th minute to equalize at 2:2 through Emil Oksanen. In the final phase, the Juniors tried everything to bring about a decision in regulation time, but were unable to find a way past goalkeeper Hofer.
After a goalless extra time, the game was decided in a penalty shoot-out. Goalkeeper Valentin Ankirchner showed strong nerves, while Philipp Wimmer converted the decisive penalty to give the Red Bull Hockey Juniors a 3:2 home win.
