Game report
The Red Bull Hockey Juniors started their first game since November 30, 2024 - the break was needed for national team duty - at their usual high tempo. The young Salzburgers created their first chances early on in the game and were able to take control of the game more and more. In the 7th minute of the game, the Juniors also created their first overtime situation and almost made the most of it, but Cavalier goalkeeper Giovanelli Tizian was on the spot. As time progressed, the game remained in the visitors' defensive third. In the 16th minute of the game, Paul Oberhauser finally managed to give the Juniors the lead with his second goal in the Alps Hockey League after a pass from Nikita Kessler.
The Red Bulls initially carried their dominance from the first period into the second and Luca Kogler hammered the puck into the corner of the net from the blue line after 42 seconds (21st) to make it 2:0. However, the Italians, slightly decimated by the U20 World Championship (Division IB), stepped up the pace and Moritz Kaufmann scored the equalizer in the 25th minute. The visitors now managed to put the Juniors under pressure on several occasions and fired testing shots at Juniors goalkeeper Ankirchner. The game became much more balanced. In the 33rd minute, it was Luca Kogler again who restored the two-goal lead after a pass from Adrian Gesson. Towards the end of the second period, the Juniors had another spell of superior numbers, but the Cavaliers did not allow any further goals thanks to their strong penalty killing.
The final period started with a top chance for Jakob Schnabl, but he just missed the goal. It was an open exchange of blows and the pace remained extremely high. In the 45th minute, Davide Girardi cleverly positioned himself in front of Ankirchner and deflected Sullmann Pilser Michael's shot into the net to make it 2-3. Both teams fought for every inch and looked for the next goal in the game. In the 50th minute, Unterland had their first overtime situation. With the equalizer in sight, the visitors tested goalkeeper Ankirchner from all angles and were finally able to beat him through Tobias Moretti Brighenti in the 51st minute. However, the equalizer did not last long and Maximilian Wurzer restored the lead just one minute later (52') after a pass from Lukas Hörl. In the final minutes of the game, the Red Bulls were once again short-handed. The Cavaliers tried a 6-on-4, but Luca Kogler scored an empty-net goal in the 59th minute to make it 5:3.
