Game report
The last game of the year for the Red Bull Hockey Juniors got off to an even start. Both teams felt each other out and looked for their first opportunities. Salzburg got into the game better and better and created good chances, but the visitors used their patience and waited for mistakes in the Juniors' defense. In the 5th minute of the game, David Baloh scored the 0:1 for Jesenice. The Slovenians made the most of a subsequent short-handed situation: Santeri Sillanpaa increased the score to 0:2 in the 9th minute of the game. Despite all the Red Bulls' efforts, Jack Lyons (12th) scored to make it 0:3. The young Salzburgers did not give up and became more active once again. In the 17th minute, Adrian Gesson reduced the deficit to 1:3 after a duel in front of the opponent's goal.
The second period started with a bang. Outnumbered, Paul Vinzens scored the equalizer after just ten seconds (21st) to make it 2:3, assisted by Leon Kolarik. Just one minute later (22'), Phillip Sinn equalized to make it 3:3. The Red Bulls were now much more active and created one top-class chance after another. However, several short-handed situations put Salzburg to the test. Thanks to a strong defensive performance and a brilliant goalkeeper Valentin Ankirchner, they survived these phases unscathed. Back at full strength, both teams engaged in an open exchange of blows.
Jesenice got off to the better start in the final period and put the Juniors under pressure. Tadej Cimzar gave the visitors the lead again in the 45th minute to make it 3:4. The Red Bulls immediately tried to counterattack and were given an overtime advantage shortly afterwards, but were unable to capitalize on it. Both teams fought doggedly for every centimeter of ice. In the 52nd minute, Martin Bohinc deflected a shot from Aljaz Hrobat Plemelj to make it 3:5. But the Juniors showed morale again: Paul Vinzens scored his second goal in the 57th minute to make it 4:5. In the last two minutes of the game, Salzburg put all their eggs in one basket and took the goalkeeper off the ice for an extra outfield player. With 20 seconds remaining (60th), Adrian Gesson managed to equalize the score at 5:5. The following overtime started intensely, but a penalty time against the Juniors gave Jesenice the advantage. In the 64th minute, Gregor Koblar finally decided the game for the Slovenians with a goal to make it 5:6.
