Course of the game
The Red Bulls (without the convalescents Florian Baltram, Niki Kraus, Nash Nienhuis and Ali Wukovits) got off to a powerful start with some good shots in the opening minutes. However, the momentum changed and the visitors also established themselves in the attacking zone at times and tested Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen. However, Peter Hochkofler soon put the Red Bulls ahead (7th), deflecting Ryan Murphy's shot beyond the reach of Bolzano goalkeeper Sam Harvey. Three minutes later, Andrew Rowe shot from a turn in the half-high slot and netted for a 2:0 lead (10'). The Italians then opened up the game again, which became tougher, but Salzburg went one better during a powerplay. Benjamin Nissner finished Ryan Murphy's picture-book pass at the right post to make it 3:0 at the break.
After the break, Bolzano were on the advance. Giordano Finoro missed the visitors' first goal with a solo effort (23'). But Matt Bradley made up for it shortly afterwards, scoring in the power play (24'). The game now went back and forth, with quick moves and good chances on both sides. The Red Bulls came close to scoring the next goal during another good power play, but the visitors scored again. Giordano Finoro scored from the left face-off circle into the corner of the net (36') to make it 2:3. And two minutes before the second break, Dustin Gazley actually equalized the score with a point-blank shot (38'). 3:3 after 40 minutes.
In the final third, there was a fierce fight for the lead. The Red Bulls initially had more of the play, but the visitors were always dangerous on their advances. In the 46th minute, Benjamin Nissner powered his way in front of goal but was put under decisive pressure. The space in front of the goals was tightened up, meaning that good shots became rarer, but the duels became more intense. Until Ryan Murphy took a sensitive shot from the blue line and tucked it into the net (51'). The game remained hot, with Bolzano lurking for counter-attacking opportunities as the Red Bulls now controlled the game and remained dangerous. Atte Tolvanen had a few more crucial saves and then Luca Auer and Benjamin Nissner made it all clear with goals into the empty net.
