Starting position
After a good start to the 2024/25 ICE season and an interim 2nd place in the table, the Red Bulls have recently lost some ground and currently find themselves in 7th place - also due to the CHL playoff games against the Lahti Pelicans and the associated postponements, i.e. two to four fewer games played than the other ICE clubs. The eighth-placed Vienna Capitals are therefore direct neighbors in the table, but have already played four games more than the Salzburg team.
The Red Bulls want to build on their strong performance in Vienna from last Tuesday's CHL game in Lahti and be just as compact as a team and resolute in the duels. And they want to finally win again in Vienna; the last away win against the Vienna Capitals dates back to January 29, 2023, when Salzburg prevailed 3:1. The Red Bulls won the first meeting in the current basic round 3:0 in Salzburg in mid-October.
After missing out on the play-offs last season, the Vienna Capitals have consolidated somewhat and remain in touch with the top half of the table. They have also celebrated successes in their last two games, beating Linz 4:3 after overtime before the international break and only yesterday defeating Hungary 3:1 (!) in their own stadium.
Goaltender in the spotlight
Following the absence of Tyler Parks due to injury, 22-year-old Vienna-born Sebastian Wraneschitz has played the most games for the Capitals so far and was also in action yesterday in Székesfehérvár. Record: In 9 games a save percentage of 90.8%. This week, the Capitals signed Peyton Jones from the ECHL, but the 28-year-old American has yet to play a game in the ICE Hockey League. The goalie recently had a 96.4% save percentage with the Indy Fuel.
The Red Bulls have their usual goalkeeper duo at the start. Atte Tolvanen has a 92.4% save percentage after 8 games, David Kickert has a 86.2% save percentage after 6 games.
Niki Kraus out for longer
In addition to Florian Baltram, the Red Bulls will also be without Niki Kraus in Vienna, who suffered an injury in Lahti (lower body) and will be out for a longer period of time. An exact diagnosis is still pending. Back is defenseman Phillip Sinn, who had to miss the international games with Germany last week and the CHL game in Lahti due to an upper body injury.
