Game recap
The Red Bulls (without Florian Baltram, Andrew Rowe and Phillip Sinn) got off to the best possible start in Bruneck with an early goal from Mario Huber. The 28-year-old forward put the disc into the net from the half-high slot (2nd) and overcame Pustertal goalie Andreas Bernard for the first time. The Red Bulls remained in control of the game after that, kept the ball moving and created further opportunities. Salzburg goalkeeper David Kickert didn't have much to do at first, but had to let Tommy Purdeller's well-placed shot pass in the 14th minute after a strong individual performance. Pustertal's Tyler Coulter was unable to get past the Salzburg goalkeeper after a solo effort (17') and Troy Bourke finally restored the lead (19'), pushing the rebound after a Ryan Murphy shot over the line for a deserved 2:1 lead at the break.
Then the tide turned. Brett Findlay equalized the game after the break in the power play with a shot right into the corner of the net (22'). And then the home side took the lead. Jashua Wesley scored from the blue line, David Kickert had zero vision (29'). Salzburg now had trouble keeping the Italians at bay and out of their own defensive zone, and David Kickert was called upon in many dicey situations. However, he could do nothing to prevent the fourth Pustertal goal, scored with a hammer shot in the power play by Alex Petan (37'). The home side had turned the game completely in their favor and led 4:2 after 40 minutes.
The Red Bulls struck back after the break, with 19-year-old Vadim Schreiner netting his first goal in the professional league directly in front of goal (42'). But the joy did not last long, as three minutes later Davide Conci scored from an acute angle from a turn to give the home side a 5:3 lead (45') against Atte Tolvanen, who replaced David Kickert at the start of the third. The game remained open and went back and forth, but Pustertal was playing with a two-goal lead and the Red Bulls were running out of time despite many strong scenes in front of goal. In the final minutes, the air in front of the Pustertal goal was on fire, but there was little space and the Red Bulls simply couldn't find the gap to close the gap again. Alex Petan finally scored the empty goal to seal the Red Bulls' 3:6 defeat in Bruneck.
