Starting position
It is somewhat curious that the Red Bulls have to face the Pustertal Wolves for the third time in only the 13th game of the basic round. The advantage: they already know their opponents well enough, which of course applies to both sides. And it is the Red Bulls' first appearance in Bruneck, as the first two games were played in Salzburg. While the Red Bulls won the first encounter 7:3, they were then beaten 6:7 in a penalty shoot-out, which also somewhat tarnished the celebratory status of Troy Bourke's hat-trick at the time.
The Pustertal Wolves remain in sixth place and are slowly stalking towards the top third of the table. Yesterday, they were narrowly beaten 2:4 against league leaders Bolzano, including an empty-net goal. The Red Bulls lost 3-2 at home to Villach yesterday, but had the chance to get more out of the game. The Austrian champions have thus dropped back to fifth place and are now Pustertal's immediate neighbors in the table. The Red Bulls are preparing for a tough game against the Wolves - the Intercable Arena in Bruneck, newly opened in 2021, can become a real cauldron with its 3,100 seats - but want to correct the mistakes from yesterday's game and head into the international break with a win.
Numbers games with Thomas Raffl
Actually, the anniversary in yesterday's home game against VSV would have been more fitting: Thomas Raffl played his 699th league game for the Red Bulls against his home club Villach, tomorrow in Bruneck the Salzburg captain will complete the 700th. By then, he will have scored 280 goals and 335 assists for the nine-time league champions. Just last week, on October 22, Raffl scored his 700th point in his 931st league game for the club. Only John Hughes (currently 1053 points!) and the no longer active Thomas Koch (913 points) have reached this mark so far.
Numbers games that please the 38-year-old veteran, but are not the reason for his unbroken dedication to the sport of ice hockey: “Milestones are something nice that I will look back on fondly one day. But it shows me how long I've been at it and that I've done a lot of things right. You just have to keep at it.”
