Game recap
The Red Bulls went into the game against Villach without the injured Florian Baltram and Andrew Rowe. Instead, Leon Kolarik, a 17-year-old forward from the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy, made his debut with the reigning champions in the win2day ICE Hockey League after the Vienna native had already played two test games with the Red Bulls in August.
Salzburg's Chay Genoway had the first big opportunity in the slot right in front of Villach's Jean-Philippe Lamoureux's goal (5th). In the very same minute, Villach's John Hughes shot over the goal after a short solo run, but was still obstructed by defenders. However, the visitors took the lead with their next breakthrough, Alex Wall giving Atte Tolvanen in goal no chance (6'). The game continued on an even keel. Salzburg tried to build up play, the visitors were really fast and dangerous with breakaways. Lucas Thaler suddenly had time in front of goal, but only hit the post (11). Peter Schneider was also unable to get past JP Lamoureux with a follow-up shot (16). The Red Bulls' chances became more frequent and better, in the end the home side played almost exclusively in the offensive zone. The only thing they couldn't do in the first period was score.
Benjamin Nissner broke through the defense right at the start of the second period (21). At the other end, Max Coatta had a free shot from close range (22). The same shooter then scored from an acute angle in the first power play of the game to give the visitors a 2:0 lead (25'). The Red Bulls then increased the pressure and came close to tying the game during a good power play (from the 30th minute). Benjamin Nissner finally scored from half-distance to make it 1-2 (33'). Salzburg kept going and created more and more chances - even when short-handed with a 2-on-1 counter-attack from Peter Hochkofler and Ali Wukovits. And then it was once again Thomas Raffl who beat JP Lamoureux from half-distance with his seventh goal of the season (40') to make it 2:2 at the break.
In the final third, the Red Bulls wanted an early decision. But VSV kept at it and so a racy back-and-forth developed again with many good shots on both sides. Villach took the lead again with a goal from Chase Pearson in a lot of traffic in front of the goal (50'). Salzburg were on the verge of equalizing during a good powerplay (from the 52nd), but couldn't get the shot in. Even in an extreme phase of pressure afterwards, there was always a Villach leg or stick or the strong JP Lamoureux in between. The Red Bulls threw everything forward in the final phase with six outfield players, but could not find the way into the goal against Villach, who fought with self-sacrifice, and ultimately had to accept the 2:3 defeat.
