Starting position
Ten games, nine wins. Including yesterday's 7:2 win at the runners-up in Klagenfurt and the 3:2 victory a week ago in Graz against the Styrians, who have been hugely upgraded this year. Only a 2:8 home defeat against Asiago at the beginning of October means that their record to date is not flawless. The South Tyroleans are currently the measure of all things in the ICE Hockey League and the team to beat if they want to finish top of the table.
As in previous years, the team is more North American than any other in the league. Nine Canadians and one US-American form the core of the team, complemented by six players with Italian-Canadian or Italian-American dual citizenship and seven Italians. The team is held together and led by the experienced and league-tested Head Coach Glen Hanlon (67), who is in his third season with the South Tyroleans, including perennial favorites Mike Halmo and Dustin Gazley.
After ten games, the Red Bulls are in fourth place in the table with six wins and four defeats and, after three previous defeats including the CHL game against Sparta Prague, have had a taste of success again with their latest 6:1 win in Innsbruck (Tuesday). The Salzburgers want to continue this upward trend in Bolzano, but are aware that HCB is a different caliber, as last season's seven-game semi-final series with the better end for the Red Bulls showed. The gap to leaders Bolzano: seven points.
Bolzano with fewer goals conceded
Apart from the standings, the biggest statistical difference lies in the defense. Bolzano have only conceded 20 goals so far. That is the second-best league figure behind Székesfehérvár with 16 goals conceded. The Red Bulls have already conceded 31 goals. In offense, both teams are in step with 40 goals scored. Only Pustertal has scored once more.
