Game recap
The game was immediately explosive. After 30 seconds, Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen had to save David Maier's excellent shot. A minute later, Ryan Murphy received the perfect pass from Peter Schneider and one-timed the shot from a tight angle over the shoulder of Klagenfurt goalkeeper Sebastian Dahm and under the crossbar (2'). Salzburg then took over more and more, even though Nick Petersen had the next good chance for the visitors after a 2-on-1 counter-attack (6'). The Red Bulls played like they were in the powerplay at times and caused the visitors' defense to flounder with a lot of traffic in front of goal. Klagenfurt's best man in the first period was their goalkeeper, who prevented them from going further behind. As was the case with Peter Hochkofler's shot directly in front of goal (18th) or Thomas Raffl from the face-off circle (19th). Shortly before the break, however, Klagenfurt's Jesper Jensen Aabo also hit the bar from distance (20'). Salzburg's 1:0 lead after 20 minutes was well deserved.
Barely into the second period, Nick Petersen had another top chance and was able to shoot completely freely from the slot (22'). Klagenfurt were now on fire and Maximilian Preiml scored the equalizer with a deflected shot from distance (23'). The KAC had finally got into the game and the game now went back and forth with changing chances. As the game wore on, it became bogged down in duels at times without losing any of its tension. And then the visitors scored. Matt Fraser gave the KAC the lead again with a concealed shot (34'). The Red Bulls then dominated and hardly let the visitors out of their own zone, Niki Kraus (300th league game today) had a chance from a tight angle (37'), Mario Huber from full stretch from half distance (39'). But after 40 minutes, the visitors led 2:1.
The Red Bulls equalized 50 seconds after the break, Peter Hochkofler beat a defender and the goalie on the follow-up shot (41'). Salzburg then turned up the heat and created chance after chance with numerous rebound opportunities. It was not until the 48th minute that the visitors opened up the game again and became dangerous. The game went up and down again at an unbroken high tempo. Ryan Murphy tried it with speed from the half-high slot (53'), Dennis Robertson narrowly missed a sharp cross-ice pass in front of goal (56'), and Thomas Raffl also shot just wide with a backhand (59'). It finally had to go into extra time, in which the home side again had great chances with Ryan Murphy and Troy Bourke. However, a converted penalty from Johannes Bischofberger ended the game (65'), in which the Red Bulls were narrowly beaten 2:3.
