Game report
The game got off to a physical start and the visitors from Italy had their first overtime situation as early as the 6th minute. However, Salzburg defended confidently and hardly allowed any chances. The visitors then got into the game better, but the Juniors stood firm defensively. The first period continued with opportunities on both sides without a goal being scored. Shortly before the break, Maximilian Wurzer had the best chance to date after a pass from Paul Noll, but was denied by goalkeeper Hayden Hawkey.
Both teams played much more offensively in the second half and created good opportunities early on. The Juniors now got into the game better and had numerous chances. Another short-handed situation interrupted their momentum, but they also survived without conceding a goal. Back at full strength, the Red Bulls continued to exert pressure but were unable to score. Both of last year's semi-finalists fought an intense battle for every centimeter of ice. In the 35th minute, the visitors finally took a 1:0 lead through Andrea De Luca. Cortina used the ensuing overtime to put further pressure on goalkeeper Thomas Pfarrmaier, but he prevented another goal A late overtime spell for the Juniors almost brought the equalizer, but Leon Kolarik only hit the post.
The final period began on an even keel. In the 45th minute, the young Salzburg team conceded another goal when Luca Barnabò made it 2:0. The Red Bulls tried to react immediately, but the visitors took control and were closer to a third goal. Pfarrmaier kept his team in the game with some strong saves. The Juniors now threw everything forward and increased the tempo, but they hardly had any clear chances against the defensively strong Italians. They were unlucky when Adrian Gesson broke his stick while finishing (56') and Jakob Schnabl only hit the post (58'). In the final two minutes, the Juniors took goalkeeper Pfarrmaier off the ice for an extra outfield player, but Cortina made the most of the opportunity: Filippo Pompanin scored into an empty net to make it 3:0 (59').
