Match report
Highly concentrated start on both sides. The game went up and down at a high tempo for a long time without any compelling scoring chances. However, the Red Bulls gradually gained more puck possession and also noticeably increased the pressure in the duels. Troy Bourke had the first top chance (11th), but did not get the puck right in front of the goal. In the 14th minute, Mario Huber extended Niki Kraus' pass and scored his first goal of the season to make it 1-0. Vienna's 1.99-metre-tall former NHL goalie Anders Lindbäck had to let it pass on his Caps debut. Vienna also had the occasional shot, which was no problem for the recovered Atte Tolvanen. Like Evan Jasper's hard shot from the slot (15th). But Salzburg's chances improved, Ali Wukovits had a good attempt from the left face-off circle (17') and Mario Huber just missed the shot at the post in the power play (19'). The Red Bulls led 1:0 after an intense opening period.
At the start of the second period, the Red Bulls played an impeccable shorthanded game and increased the lead to 2:0 right at the end of it. Troy Bourke tapped in Ali Wukovits' cross-ice pass after a 2-on-1 counter-attack (25'). The Red Bulls were now largely in control, Niki Kraus again had the next great chance after a counter-attack with Andrew Rowe (32'). But the Caps remained dangerous when they got in front of goal and forced Atte Tolvanen to make saves at intervals. But Ali Wukovits completed a picture-book attack with a wonderful combination via Lucas Thaler and Peter Hochkofler (36') to give the Caps a comfortable 3:0 lead after two periods.
In the final period, the visitors played even more intensively for the first goal and had some good scenes during an early powerplay. However, the Red Bulls also did their job at the back and blocked most of the shots before they reached the goal. Salzburg stuck to their game consistently and so it went back and forth until the end with more good shots on both sides. In the 55th minute, Atte Tolvanen grabbed the disc with a clear view for Vienna's Niki Hartl after a strong reaction with his catching hand and thus secured his first shutout of the season, as the Red Bulls also held out in a really intense final phase and celebrated a deserved 3:0 home win against the spusu Vienna Capitals.
