Game report
Good start for the Red Bulls. They had to play an early short-handed game, but Mario Huber had the first top chance after a solo effort (3rd). The home side then opened up the game and Benjamin Nissner (6) had the next chance from the slot. Brett Findlay then put the visitors ahead with a deflected shot - no chance for goalkeeper David Kickert - (9'), but Salzburg did not allow themselves to be rattled. Troy Bourke netted from a rebound to equalize against Bruneck goalkeeper Andreas Bernard (10th). The game then went up and down, and Luca Auer almost gave the Red Bulls the lead with the same goal as Troy Bourke before him after a cross pass and rebound (17'). However, David Kickert was also on hand to save several good chances for the visitors, who kept the game open overall, and secured the 2:1 lead at the first break.
The second period was initially torn apart by penalties on both sides. Nevertheless, the Red Bulls had more possession and chances. And Troy Bourke made the most of them, scoring twice. On a pass from Niki Kraus (26) and a follow-up shot (30), he scored a hat-trick to put the Red Bulls 4:1 ahead. The Pustertalers kept at it, with Tommaso Traversa also converting a rebound directly in front of David Kickert, who had previously shone with a big save while short-handed. However, the goalkeeper had no view of the subsequent third Wolves goal by Jashua Wesley from distance (33'). The answer came in the form of Dennis Robertson, who netted from the half-high slot with a well-directed wrist shot (34'). Five goals were enough for the second period, even if Bruneck goalkeeper Andreas Bernard prevented the next goal several times during a final Salzburg powerplay.
The game remained hot and Pustertal came back into the game after the break. Tyler Coulter circled the goal and shot past the defenders into the far corner (45') to make it 4:5 from the visitors' perspective. Shortly afterwards, David Kickert prevented the visitors from equalizing with a 'monster save' when they were 2:1 up (47'). However, Pustertal then managed to do so, again from a counter-attack and Brett Findlay's follow-up shot (49'). Shots were now being taken from every position and both teams had several chances to take the lead. It finally went into overtime, which was evenly matched in terms of chances, with David Kickert also stopping Jashua Wesley's solo run (61'). After a goalless overtime, the visitors had the better end in the penalty shootout and took their second point after the eighth penalty in total, ending Salzburg's recent winning streak.
