Austrian vs. Swiss champions
The Red Bulls Salute international invitational tournament is being held for the 17th time and offers four top European teams and local ice hockey fans the perfect stage to kick off the new 2024/25 season. EC Red Bull Salzburg will face the ZSC Lions and is expecting a tough duel against the ten-time Swiss champions - the Zurich team beat Lausanne in seven finals last season.
Salzburg's Head Coach Oliver David also knows the ZSC from his time as co-coach of Biel-Bienne in Switzerland: “They are one of the best clubs in Europe, have a very broad squad and play at a high level. It's a first-class challenge.”
Statement Benjamin Nissner
The Red Bulls already had their experience with the ZSC Lions last season. At the Red Bulls Salute 2023, they were narrowly defeated 0:1 in the match for third place. The game in the 2,600-capacity KE KELIT Arena in Zell am See kicks off at 19:30.
Benjamin Nissner
“We feel good and are ready for the weekend. We still have a score to settle with the ZSC Lions and we're really looking forward to playing an opponent like that. Just like the Red Bulls Salute, which will be something very special again.”
Traditional Swiss club with a great history
In terms of championship titles, the ZSC Lions are the third most successful club in Swiss ice hockey history after Davos and Bern. Founded in 1930, the club also has many other trophies in its display case; victories in the Victoria Cup (2009), IIHF Continental Cup (2001 and 2002), three Swiss Cup winners and two tournament successes in the Spengler Cup are evidence of a great tradition.
Head coach is Marc Crawford, who has 15 years of experience as head coach of various NHL clubs. The 63-year-old Canadian was already head coach of the Lions from 2012 to 2016 and won the Swiss championship with them in 2014. He returned to Zurich in December 2022, replaced Rikard Grönborg on the coaching bench and won the championship again ten years after his first success.
The Swiss are taking part in the Red Bulls Salute for the fifth time, having also won the tournament in 2006.
