Lions have their claws out again Swiss champions face Red Bulls twice this year// CHLWhen the ZSC Lions await the Red Bulls in Zurich on September 15 in the regular season of the CHL, it will be the second clash with the reigning Swiss champions in the coming season after the Red Bulls Salute on August 16-17 in Zell am See. It's slowly becoming a habit. The Lions from Zurich and the Red Bulls have already met five times in the past. Twice at the Red Bulls Salute - last year the Salzburg team lost 1-0 in Zell am See in the third-place game - as well as in the European Trophy (2010) and in other pre-season games. This year, the two teams will face each other twice and will have the chance to stake out their territory in the semi-final of the Red Bulls Salute before going on to score points in the European premier league in the CHL.
High level of play
Salzburg's Head Coach Oliver David knows ZSC from his time as co-coach of Biel-Bienne in Switzerland: “They are one of Europe’s best clubs, have a very deep roster, and collectively possess a high level of skill to play the game. What a great challenge to look forward to."

Red Bulls vs. ZSC Lions | Red Bulls Salute 2023
Impressive history
Just like the Red Bulls in the ICE final against Klagenfurt, the Lions had to go through seven games in the Swiss National League final against Lausanne HC to secure the tenth title in the club's history after a six-year break. The ZSC Lions are the third most successful club in Swiss ice hockey history after Davos and Bern. Founded in 1930, the club also has many other trophies in its display case; victories in the Victoria Cup (2009), IIHF Continental Cup (2001 and 2002), three Swiss Cup winners and two tournament successes in the Spengler Cup tell of a great tradition.

Champion maker from Canada
Zurich's head coach Marc Crawford, blessed with 15 years of experience as head coach of various NHL clubs, has also made history with the Swiss. The 63-year-old Canadian was already head coach of the Lions from 2012 to 2016 and won the Swiss championship with them in 2014. From 2016 to 2022, he worked as an assistant coach at two clubs in the NHL before returning to Zurich in December 2022, replacing Rikard Grönborg on the coaching bench and triumphing again in Zurich ten years after his first success.
Modern arena with Europe's largest video cube
The Lions have been playing their home games in the Swiss Life Arena in Zurich, which opened in 2022, for two years now. The multi-purpose arena seats 12,000 spectators. A special eye-catcher in the truest sense of the word is the largest LED video cube installed in an ice hockey stadium in Europe, measuring 12x12x8 meters on a side and weighing a total of 21 tons. Champions Hockey League | Mode
24 teams play in the regular season. Each team has six games against six different opponents, which are allocated by lot. This means that each team has three home games and three away games against six different opponents. Teams from the same league cannot play each other in the regular season. The results of the regular season (3-point ranking) are used to produce a ranking of all 24 teams.
The first 16 teams qualify for the play-off round of 16, with 1st playing against 16th, 2nd against 15th and so on. This results in the playoff tree up to the final. The play-off matches are decided by a first and second leg, with the total number of goals (aggregate score) being decisive in the event of a tie. Only the final is decided in an all-important match.
