Game recap
Salzburg were still missing Thomas Raffl, Peter Schneider and Lucas Thaler for the first test. Instead, Vadim Schreiner, an 18-year-old German forward who has been at the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy since 2020, made his debut in the Red Bulls' professional team. They got off to a lively start and had the better opening minutes. In the general search for coordination, the Swiss then got into the game better and had more time in front of the Salzburg goal, where David Kickert was very agile and also stood in the way of Mike Künzle's through ball (16'). The first good Salzburg combinations whetted the appetite for more, with the Red Bulls producing the best shots in the only powerplay of the first period. But EV Zug goalkeeper Tim Wolf didn't make any mistakes either.
Benjamin Nissner opened the scoring in the second period, scoring from an acute angle on a counter-attack to take the lead (24'). The Swiss had the answer and followed up with three goals. Nando Eggenberger (26) and Dario Simion (28) converted well-created chances, while Fredrik Olofsson scored with a deflected shot (27). The Red Bulls then focused more on the forwards and 20-year-old Philipp Krening scored his first professional goal for the Red Bulls with a powerful shot from the slot (29'). The game was now on fire and both teams had further good opportunities up to the second break. Zug held on to its 3:2 lead after 40 minutes.
Zug increased their lead two and a half minutes after the break with Dario Simion's second goal of the day, but the Red Bulls stepped up their game and now had their best offensive phase. Troy Bourke quickly scored the equalizer in the 51st minute. The two rivals then put up a good fight until the end, which also led to fisticuffs here and there. The Swiss then put the finishing touches on the game with an empty-net goal in the 60th minute and secured a 5:3 victory after an altogether appealing game.
