It was a big challenge for Oliver David when he replaced Matt McIlvane as head coach last year and took over a successful team that had won two championship titles in a row at the time. For the 45-year-old American, who spent many years in the USHL, the most important junior ice hockey league in the USA, as well as two years in the Swiss National League as Assistant Coach at EHC Biel-Bienne, the Red Bulls were his first stop as Head Coach in a professional league. After the best start to a season in the club's history, David and his coaching team finally managed to win the win2day ICE Hockey League for the third time in a row in his first year as head coach of the Red Bulls after finishing third in the basic round.
With Associate Coach Ben Copper (CAN, 47) and Assistant Coach Daniel Petersson (SWE, 42), two coaches have been working with the professional team for three years who successfully contribute different areas of expertise. Cooper has a wealth of experience from his time as a video and assistant coach with the Canadian national team, the NHL teams Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers and as head coach with the Herning Blue Fox in the Danish top league. Petersson came to the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy in 2014 from the Rögle youth academy, where he was head coach of their U20 team, and is therefore familiar with both the Swedish youth academy and the Red Bulls' philosophy. Now based in Salzburg, the Swede was promoted to the professional team in the 2020/21 season and acts as a link between the pros and the farm team.
Markus Kerschbaumer (AUT, 49) came to Salzburg in 2019 after many years as a goalie and video coach in Villach and with the Austrian national team, seamlessly continuing his successful work with the Red Bulls. His expert knowledge from a total of 19 years as a specialist coach not only benefits the top goalies from the professional team, but also the goalkeeper coaches and goalkeepers from the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy, most recently Simon Wolf, who signed a contract with EHC Red Bull Munich after six years at the academy.
All three co-trainers have played a key role in the Red Bulls' success over the past three years and are entering their second season together as a quartet with Head Coach Oliver David.
