Course of the match
The visitors started the encounter with an early double strike. Paul Postma made the most of a chance in the second minute after a brief scramble in front of the Salzburg goal, and a minute and a half later Klagenfurt went 2:0 up again from close range with Matt Fraser. Only then did the Red Bulls open up the game and became dangerous themselves with their first good shots. Now it was back to the usual intense back-and-forth, with dangerous moments alternating almost every minute on both sides. Ryan Murphy got right in front of Klagenfurt goalkeeper Sebastian Dahm (6'), Lucas Thaler tried a 3-on-2 from an acute angle (12'). The Red Bulls now had significantly more possession and stepped up their attacking game. In the first short-handed game of the match, Paul Huber had a good chance from the half-high slot (17') and Florian Baltram backhanded a shot at the right post in the final minute. Salzburg were on the advance, but went into the first break 2-0 down.
Salzburg continued to play the attacking card, but were lucky on their first powerplay when the visitors were outnumbered on a 2-on-1 counter-attack (23'). Mario Huber was then stopped on a solo run (25'). From the 30th minute onwards, the KAC got back on the offensive and were immediately dangerous, Atte Tolvanen was again increasingly called upon. The game became more intense and tougher, with both teams pressing irresistibly on goal. Ryan Murphy then took heart, hammered the ball into the net from distance and reduced the deficit to 1:2 (36'). That gave the Red Bulls renewed impetus and they immediately pressed on. But towards the end, the KAC were also back in full force and dangerous, with the game now also characterized by many hectic losses of possession in the neutral zone. After 40 minutes, the Red Bulls were only one goal behind.
The Red Bulls came out strongly in the final third and initially put the ball in front of the goal several times. The KAC then caught themselves, but the Red Bulls kept the pressure on. Nicolai Meyer had a top chance at the right post in front of the half-open goal (46'), Sebastian Dahm reacted strongly. The visitors then did more on the offensive again and promptly increased their lead to 3:1 after a 2-on-1 attack by Nick Petersen. The Red Bulls once again chased the two-goal deficit and pressed vehemently to close the gap. There wasn't much space in front of goal, but the chances were there, especially from the rebounds. However, there was always a Klagenfurt stick nearby or Sebastian Dahm, who saved a few really good shots. The KAC then scored once more in the 57th minute, Lukas Haudum scoring after a counter-attack, and that was also the final score. The Red Bulls lost to the KAC in the sixth final game after a great fight, but without any luck in shooting and now have another chance - like the KAC - to win the championship on Friday.
Statement by Paul Huber
"A start like that shouldn't happen to us in such an important game. I believe that we nevertheless coped well and came back well. But then a few stupid mistakes by Klagefurt were punished badly again. Now we have to start all over again. There's a seventh game in Klagenfurt and we'll be ready for that."
