Course of the match
Both teams had their first dangerous chances early on in the game, but the goalkeepers did not allow them to score. The Juniors then dominated the game and the game increasingly shifted to Cortina's defense. The Italians remained dangerous with their quick transition play and created counter-attacking opportunities. Cortina then went into a pressure phase; the Juniors survived this phase strongly and got back on the offensive thanks to a 5-on-3 superiority. Despite further strong chances, the opening goal was not scored until the 17th minute: Devin Steffler scored from the blue line after a pass from Fabian Baumann to make it 1:0. In the final minutes of the first period, Cortina tried everything to restore the equalizer and laid siege to the Juniors' goal - also strengthened by a superior number - but failed to score.
The Italians took this pressure phase into the second period, but the oldest team in the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy fought their way back. At a high tempo, the game was evenly balanced up and down for a short time. It was not until Cortina countered by scoring the equalizer in the 26th minute through Diego Cuglietta in a 4-on-3 overtime situation. Marked by a number of penalties, both teams now alternated phases of pressure and the game became increasingly tough. Both sides created good chances: Kalle Myllymaa just missed the goal (34'), Vasily Zelenov hit the bar shortly afterwards (35') and Marco Sanna put the puck into the catching hand of Juniors goalkeeper Simon Wolf for the visitors (37'). The second period ended without any further goals.
In the final period, the Juniors started with the first chances and were able to exert pressure thanks to an overpayment. Opportunities from Kalle Myllymaa (43') and Vadim Schreiner (44') almost gave them the lead again. However, it took until the 46th minute of the game for this to happen: Vadim Schreiner beat Italian goalkeeper Hayden Hawkey to make it 2:1 after a pass from Devin Steffler. Both teams then created further chances and Cortina pressed for the equalizer, but a short-handed situation took the wind out of the Italians' sails again. However, the Juniors were unable to capitalize on this. The visitors countered again in the 58th minute through Timothy Doherty with a shot from the blue line to make it 2:2. In the final minutes of the game, a 4-on-4 situation created renewed tension, but the game had to go into overtime.
In extra time, the youngest team in the Alps Hockey League had victory on the line several times, but were denied by Italian goalkeeper Hawkey. In the 67th minute of the game, Diego Cuglietta finally scored for Cortina to secure a 3:2 victory. The Italians thus won the play-off semi-final series against the Red Bull Hockey Juniors 4:2.
