Course of the match
The playoff quarter-final game started at a fast pace. The Juniors tried to set the tone in the series from the very first minute of the game. The young Salzburgers almost scored the opening goal due to an early short-handed situation, but the first meeting between the teams remained goalless for the time being. Unterland then became dangerous, but Juniors goalkeeper Simon Wolf shone with strong saves. Another overtime spell for the home side also went unused, although the Red Bull Hockey Juniors were able to dominate the game throughout the first period with strong offensive actions.
Unterland caught the Juniors off guard in the second period. Aleksi Käyrä took the lead after just 33 seconds (21'). The South Tyroleans now managed to take control of the game. With strong forechecking, they put the Juniors under pressure in their own zone early on, creating chances to win the glass and promptly increasing the lead to 2:0 in the 28th minute through David Galassiti. The young Salzburg team only found their game again after an overtime opportunity. The game now increasingly shifted to the South Tyroleans' defensive third and the Juniors created some dangerous chances. Spurred on by the newly gained momentum, Paul Vinzens finally scored the equalizer in the 35th minute.
With an even start in the final period, the game entered its final phase. The Juniors tried everything to restore the equalizer. Clever moves in offense brought them within touching distance, but Unterland played compactly in defense. The Juniors increased the pressure further with many opportunities when they were outnumbered, but were unable to find the finishing touch. The young Salzburgers took complete control of the game in the final 10 minutes and created one chance after another. However, the longed-for equalizer once again failed to materialize. In the last two minutes of the game, the Red Bull Hockey Juniors tried a sixth man. With success: Julius Ramoser scored the equalizer 11 seconds before the end of the third period (60th).
Both teams therefore had another fifteen-minute break before the game went into twenty minutes of 5-on-5 overtime. In this period, the game was physical and fast-paced. Both teams had opportunities, but were unable to beat the goalkeepers. Unterland now had the game on their hands with a 5-on-3 overtime, but the Juniors defended strongly. The Juniors then took control of the highly exciting game again, but Unterland could not be tamed. Both teams fought for every inch. It took until the 73rd minute of the game for Paul Vinzens to beat the Italian goalkeeper and score his second goal of the evening to give the Red Bull Hockey Juniors their first win in the quarter-finals.
