Instructive games at the Germany Cup Salzburg defender Philipp Wimmer with a balance sheet// National teamAustria's national team with five Salzburg players finished fourth at the Germany Cup in Landshut last weekend, but the young team put in a strong performance at times. The victory went to the hosts.
It was the Austrian national team's first test of the season ahead of the World Championships in the Czech Republic in May 2024. Team boss Roger Bader's young squad - a number of players had withdrawn shortly before the tournament due to illness - lost all three matches against Slovakia, Germany and Denmark.
Roger Bader: "It was a good experience for all the players to see that disc losses are quickly punished at this level. We have to learn from this. I would also like to emphasize that the Germany game was one of the best in recent years at the November Break. We want to build on that in December."

Three questions for our 21-year-old defender Philipp Wimmer
From your perspective, what were the biggest takeaways from the tournament? The biggest insight is that the simple things are the best. If you want to play internationally, you have to play simple and straightforward. If you win the glass at the back, you have to get it out straight away. Don't play around, get straight down to business.
How is the atmosphere in the national team in general? It was a good atmosphere. It was exhausting, partly because we were still tired from the league games and some of us got sick. But the atmosphere was good, it's a cool team.
What will you take with you from the tournament into the domestic league? I want to apply the knowledge gained from these games in the league. The fast and direct game. At some point you do that automatically and then we'll certainly find it easier against opponents like at the Germany Cup.
The victory went to the German national team, tied with Slovakia and Denmark in second and third place with a number of former Red Bull ice hockey academy players in the line-up.
