Next ICE hit awaits Red Bulls in LjubljanaTroy Bourke: "Could be similar style of play as against Pustertal"// win2day ICE Hockey League For EC Red Bull Salzburg, the win2day ICE Hockey League continues on Thursday in Ljubljana with the next big game against HK SŽ Olimpija (7.15 p.m.).
The Slovenians inflicted the first defeat on HC Pustertal Wölfe, the league leader until then, last Sunday and were match-free yesterday. The Red Bulls went to the top of the table only yesterday with a home win against the South Tyroleans and want to stay there.
The starting position Only two days after the exhausting top match of the league against Pustertal, the Red Bulls have to play in Ljubljana and meet a team that was recently match-free and can therefore go into the match rested. The Slovenians are in seventh place and have been quite surprising so far, only suffering a clear defeat against Feldkirch.
The Red Bulls have lost only once in seven games so far and travel to Ljubljana as the new league leaders. Last season, the Salzburgers won all four basic round games against the Slovenians.
The opponent HK SŽ Olimpija has consolidated again in the third ICE year after the Slovenians clearly missed the playoff spot last season. With newcomer Trevor Gooch, who came from the Aalborg Pirates, the team has also made a lucky find; the American has already scored four times for the Slovenians, making him their top scorer. American Will Cullen, who played for the Belfast Giants, the Red Bulls' next CHL opponents, last season and scored 12 times, will also be wearing the green jersey.
For the first time, there will be a reunion with Aljaž Predan (23). The Slovenian came to the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy in 2015, played the last two seasons in Salzburg's professional team and returned to his home country in the summer.
The Slovenians are hired by Finnish head coach Antti Karhula. The 47-year-old took over the team in January this year and his signature is already evident. In the 2022/23 basic round, the Slovenians conceded 192 goals in 48 games, i.e. 4 goals per game (!). After 7 games in the current season, they recorded 18 goals against, making an average of 2.5 goals against.
Forward Troy Bourke "Every team is especially motivated against us. We prepare in great detail as we do for every other game. We expect perhaps a similar style as in the game against Pustertal yesterday, also the Slovenians with their Finnish coach have often tried the 'trap style' in the past. In any case, we are prepared."
