Recap
The Red Bulls controlled the first minutes and tried a lot with shots from distance. Innsbruck's goalie Evan Buitenhuis had no problems and hardly allowed any rebounds. Innsbruck rarely came out of their own zone at first, but then became dangerous on two consecutive powerplays and promptly took the lead, Braeden Shaw gave Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen no chance from half distance (12.). Shortly before that (11.) Mario Huber got a good chance from half distance in a shorthanded situation, but could not beat the Haie goalkeeper. In the end, the Red Bulls turned up the heat once again and now came closer to the goal, but had to go into the dressing room with the 1-goal deficit after 20 minutes despite playing a significantly larger share of the game.
In the second period, the Red Bulls clearly increased the tempo after an initial shorthanded game and pressed forward, creating good chances with Benjamin Nissner's rich long-range shot (24th) and Thomas Raffl from the left face-off circle (25th). But the Red Bulls got themselves out of it again with further penalties and the home side thus into the game, who subsequently had some good opportunities. Only in the last minutes the Salzburgers really turned up the heat again and now also provided maximum danger on a power play, but could not get through against the now tight Innsbruck defense even with some rebounds.
Peter Schneider had the first big chance right in front of the goalkeeper after the restart (42nd). After that, Atte Tolvanen had to make a couple of saves in another shorthanded game before Salzburg threw everything forward again and now permanently worked towards the goal. Shot after shot hit the Innsbruck goal, the home side rarely came out of their own zone. Chay Genoway first failed after a beautiful solo through the defense to the goalie (55th), but 60 seconds before the end with six field players, his puck fizzed from the blue line into the net and brought the Red Bulls into overtime. However, after three top Innsbruck chances and a bearish Atte Tolvanen, the Finn was then unable to prevent Innsbruck's winning goal, Corey Mackin was released at the far post and inflicted the Red Bulls' first ICE loss of the season.
