New Player Fredrik Claesson

Red Bulls Bolster Defense with Former Swedish KHL Champion// Team UpdateEC Red Bull Salzburg has signed Swedish defenseman Fredrik Claesson, adding greater depth to their defensive corps. Following his time in the NHL, the 33-year-old has spent the last few years playing in the KHL for CSKA and Dynamo Moscow.
The Red Bulls are pleased to strengthen their roster with an experienced player like Fredrik Claesson. Born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden—where he notably spent a season with Djurgårdens IF in the Elitserien (now the SHL)—the defenseman was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 2011. In 2012, he moved to the AHL to join the Binghamton Senators, and three years later, in 2015, he made his NHL debut with the Ottawa Senators. Over the course of his career, which included stints with the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, and Tampa Bay Lightning, Claesson has appeared in 391 AHL games and 184 NHL games.
In 2022, the 1.85-meter-tall defenseman moved to the KHL to join CSKA Moscow, winning the Gagarin Cup—the KHL championship trophy—in his first season (2022/23). He spent two additional seasons with CSKA before moving to Dynamo Moscow for the 2025/26 season. In total, Claesson has played 276 games in the KHL.
Statement Fredrik Claesson
"I’m really looking forward to getting started with the Red Bulls in Salzburg. While I don’t know the league in great detail yet, I’m very excited about it. One of the reasons I chose Salzburg is the club’s track record of success—there’s a real winning mentality there. I’d describe my style of play as simple. I like to block shots, and I’ll throw a hit when the opportunity arises. I also use my speed to keep opponents at bay, and I have a solid shot. The goal is clear: I want to win the championship with the Red Bulls."
Statement Teemu Levijoki, Head Coach of EC Red Bull Salzburg
"Fredrik Claesson is a solid all-rounder who adds depth to our defense with his extensive experience. His signing is also a response to the long-term absence of Olivier Galipeau. Claesson brings a lot of quality—he’s good at making breakouts, handles the puck well, and adds an extra physical dimension to our game."
Claesson, who spent the summer recovering from a serious injury, has been training on the ice in his hometown of Ottawa following his rehabilitation. He is expected to arrive in Salzburg on Tuesday, though he will be coming without his family. The rugged defenseman will wear jersey number 33 for the Red Bulls.
