Match Summary Less than three minutes into the game, the Red Bulls were already facing a two-goal deficit. David Waschnig fired the puck from behind the net, hitting Salzburg goalie Atte Tolvanen, who unluckily deflected it into his own goal (3rd minute); in that same minute, Klagenfurt’s Mattias Göransson scored on a counterattack, blasting a mid-range shot under the crossbar. Salzburg recovered quickly from this early shock, with Mario Huber responding by picking the top corner with a precise shot from the slot (7th minute). However, Klagenfurt’s next goal wasn't long in coming; Raphael Herburger capitalized on a puck rebounding off the boards, scoring at the short post and leaving Tolvanen with no chance (8th minute). In a match that had become highly intense, the Red Bulls clawed their way back; Nash Nienhuis scored with a "Michigan" move (14th minute) after Benjamin Nissner had kept Klagenfurt goalie Florian Vorauer and his defenders busy at the left post. The game then grew more physical as emotions flared. In the 18th minute, the Red Bulls got lucky when the puck—amidst heavy traffic in front of the net—came to rest right on the goal line. After a furious opening period, the home team led 3–2.
The Red Bulls started the second period strongly, dictating play in the opening minutes. However, KAC extended their lead (26th minute) following a face-off, as Tobias Sablattnig scored with a quick shot that unluckily slipped through Atte Tolvanen’s pads. In an end-to-end game that was becoming increasingly physical, the home team capitalized on their next power play, with Raphael Herburger scoring via an unstoppable deflection (34th minute). Both teams had further opportunities, but the Red Bulls struggled to create genuine chances to narrow the three-goal deficit before the second intermission.
Mario Huber opened the third period with a thunderous shot from the slot into the top corner, narrowing the score to 3–5 (42nd minute). Shortly thereafter, Benjamin Nissner also had a huge opportunity right in front of the net (44th minute). The Red Bulls threw everything forward, causing uncertainty in the Klagenfurt defense. However, this also gave the home team counter-attacking opportunities; Atte Tolvanen was up to the task during a 2-on-1 break (49th minute). The game then turned into a back-and-forth affair with high pace and fierce battles for the puck, though mostly without creative scoring chances. Then came the high-tension closing phase: The Red Bulls had a 5-on-3 power play lasting just under a minute, but the home team successfully defused every dangerous situation in front of their net, effectively sealing the game. Salzburg was unable to narrow the gap further and lost 3–5 in Klagenfurt.
Statement from Peter Schneider
"We simply didn't deserve the win today. Klagenfurt was the better team, and we still have a lot of work to do if we want to compete at the top level. We were lacking in too many areas: winning battles, playing a simple game, getting pucks to the net, and maintaining defensive stability. We’ve made plenty of strides in the right direction recently, but as we saw today, setbacks are part of the process. We have to keep working hard."
