Highlights Red Bulls vs. Eisbären Berlin
Match Summary
The opening minutes belonged to the Red Bulls. Mathias Böhm fired over the crossbar in front of Berlin goaltender Jack LaFontaine (4th minute), and Nick Poisson had a promising opportunity at the left post during a power play (5th minute). However, it was during that very power play that Berlin’s Gabriel Fontaine broke away on a long solo run, giving Salzburg netminder David Kickert no chance with a shot taken at full speed (6th minute). From that moment on, the game was evenly contested, yet Berlin capitalized ruthlessly on their chances. Korbinian Geibel found the top corner with a long-range shot through heavy traffic in front of the net (10th minute), followed by Liam Kirk, who found a gap from mid-range (13th minute). In between, Mario Huber grazed the post (12th minute), but Salzburg struggled to mount an effective offense and failed to generate significant chances during another power-play opportunity. Berlin remained tenacious until the break, heading into the locker room with a 3–0 lead after 20 minutes.
The visitors opened the second period by extending their lead to 4–0 via a thunderous shot from Jean-Luc Foudy from the right face-off circle (21st minute). The Red Bulls subsequently pushed hard, cycling the puck around the Berlin net. Luca Auer deflected a shot just wide of the goal (26th minute). The puck did find the net shortly after, but Adrian Gesson’s deflection was disallowed due to a high stick (27th minute). Berlin goaltender Jack LaFontaine remained busy but was equal to every shot Salzburg threw at him. The Eisbären opened the game up again, creating another major chance via a 2-on-1 break (33rd minute). Shortly thereafter, the Red Bulls finally got on the board; Jayden Lee scored on a rebound following a counterattack to make it 1–4 (34th minute). The final minutes of the second period saw fast-paced end-to-end action with chances at both ends; Berlin maintained a three-goal lead after 40 minutes.
The pace remained high, and Dennis Robertson narrowed the gap to 2–4 in the 46th minute, lifting the puck under the crossbar following one of many attacks. The visitors became more active and dangerous again as a result, while Salzburg needed a few minutes to regain their offensive momentum. That changed in the 53rd minute when Mario Huber pounced on a rebound to make it 3–4. The Red Bulls threw everything forward, applying pressure and creating several tense moments in front of the visiting goal—even playing without a goaltender in the closing stages. However, they were unable to find the equalizer, and the Red Bulls ultimately fell 3–4 to the German champions after a hard-fought battle.
Statement Alan Letang
Statement by Luca Auer
“In the first period, we need to make sure we handle the puck better. We simply had too many turnovers. But I’m proud of the team for how we played starting in the second period. We put a lot of pressure on them, which is why it ended up being a close game. We gave it our all, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to tie the game.”
