For two periods, the Red Bulls played with spirit and aggression; despite facing a strong Swedish side and creating good chances of their own, they conceded only one goal. At the start of the final period, Salzburg pushed even harder on the attack—until the hosts made it 2–0. The Red Bulls stayed in the fight and returned strongly for the final period. Both teams were now evenly matched, with end-to-end action. The Swedes scored their second goal on a counterattack; the play had seemingly been broken up when Mark Friedman found a narrow opening from a tight angle (47th minute). Luboš Horký finished off a breakaway to make it 4–0 (52nd minute), and Mark Friedman extended the lead to 5–0 following a scramble in front of the net (53rd minute). That was the final score; despite playing well for long stretches of the match, the Red Bulls ultimately suffered a decisive defeat.
