The Juniors suffered a 1-5 loss to Jesenice.
After a strong start, the Salzburg team found themselves trailing 0–4 early on due to the home team’s quick transition play. Zan Spari Leben scored three goals for Jesenice, while Luca Fischer netted Salzburg’s consolation goal during a double power play in the final period.
Game Summary
The Red Bull Hockey Juniors established themselves in the home team’s zone right from the start and created their first scoring chances, but Jesenice was lying in wait for quick transition plays. In a two-on-one situation, Jaka Sturm set up Gregor Koblar, who scored to make it 0–1 (2nd minute). The young Salzburg team remained active on offense before Zan Spari Leben capitalized on a power play for the home team, scoring off passes from Rok Kapel and Erik Svetina to make it 0–2 (11th minute). After a prolonged period of pressure from the Juniors, Jesenice struck again: Spari Leben extended the lead to 0–3 following a pass from David Baloh (17th minute), and just 64 seconds later, Robert Sabolic made it 0–4 on a quick counterattack (19th minute).
At the start of the second period, the Red Bulls first had to weather a penalty kill and then tried to regain control of the game. Jesenice, however, remained dangerous with their quick transition play and extended their lead to 0–5 (28') on a goal by Spari Leben, assisted by David Baloh and Nejc Burgar. Shortly thereafter, the Juniors had to defend while shorthanded once again, as the home team kept up the pressure. Robert Sabolic hit the post on a shot following another quick counterattack (37th minute), and the teams went into the second intermission with the Juniors trailing 0–5.
In the final period, the Red Bulls continued to search for their first goal and had several power-play opportunities, but Jesenice defended tightly. The game then became more evenly matched, and another power play by the Juniors also failed to produce a goal at first. In the closing minutes, the Salzburg team earned a two-man advantage and capitalized on it: Luca Fischer converted the rebound from Isak Norlin to make it 1–5 (59th minute).
Statement from forward Luca Fischer:
“We actually got off to a good start, but we couldn’t find a way to capitalize on our chances. Jesenice seized the momentum in the first period and scored four goals. After that, we wanted to regain control of the game and score some goals of our own, but we weren’t able to do that. After conceding those four goals, we stopped playing our game too much. That’s not how a team should function. We need to stick together and do better in the next game.”
