Despite a strong start, the Salzburg team trailed by two goals after the first period, before the Carinthians scored another goal in both the more evenly matched second period and the final period.
Game Summary
The Juniors came out strong and forced the home team onto the defensive with their high tempo, but were contained on the wings and managed only a few dangerous shots on goalkeeper Patrick Müller. The game became more physical, and the Red Bulls weathered their first penalty kill before the Klagenfurt team found their rhythm and Linus Schrott scored to make it 0–1 in the 13th minute. During another power play for the Future Team (16th minute), Niclas Micelli capitalized on a rebound from Filip Simovic to make it 0–2. Toward the end of the first period, Juniors goaltender Luca Haitzmann made several strong saves to prevent another goal while shorthanded.
The second period started off more evenly matched, but the Klagenfurt team remained more clinical in front of the net and extended their lead to 0–3 in the 23rd minute on a goal by Marcel Vodnjov. The Juniors now stepped up their offensive efforts, while the home team created opportunities on the counterattack. In the 25th minute, Ben Öfner skated in alone toward Haitzmann, who came out on top in the one-on-one situation. The Salzburg team tried to gain more control of the game, but their inaccurate passes repeatedly got stuck in the Carinthian defense, which consistently kept the middle closed off.
The Red Bull Hockey Juniors came out of the locker room with strong momentum and tested Müller several times early in the final period. Nevertheless, the Future Team struck again: Aljaz Hrobat Plemelj extended the lead to 0–4 in the 44th minute. After that, play went back and forth on the ice before the Juniors launched a final offensive. Despite several shots on goal, the Red Bulls were unable to create many dangerous chances against Klagenfurt’s defense and failed to score.
Statement by Head Coach Teemu Levijoki
“We took too many penalties and didn’t push forward consistently enough. On defense, we allowed too many rebounds. Klagenfurt kept us well contained on the wings and made it difficult for us to get in front of the net. But it was only the second game of the season. Experiences like this are part of the learning process. We need to learn from this and work on these areas.”
