Background
The Red Bulls could certainly have won yesterday's game against KAC – with a bit more luck in front of goal, especially in the final period, where Klagenfurt admittedly defended strongly, at least a point would have been deserved. As it was, the scoreboard showed 1-2 at the end of a match between two evenly matched rivals, and the Red Bulls subsequently dropped to eighth place in the standings. This last happened on November 25, 2020; back then, the Red Bulls immediately climbed back to seventh place in the very next round and finished the 2020/21 regular season (before the intermediate round) in fifth place.
Despite the current ups and downs, the Red Bulls remain confident that they can return to a consistently successful performance in the second half of the season and, with hard work and patience, fight their way back into the playoff positions. Captain Thomas Raffl saw yesterday's narrow defeat against the new league leaders, KAC, as a good test for the path the reigning champions now intend to take.
The next test comes tomorrow against the Vienna Capitals, who are currently trying to climb out of a real slump and, as the eleventh-placed team, are aiming for a spot in the pre-playoffs (7th to 10th place). With the 66-year-old American Kevin Constantine, a seasoned league veteran who took over as head coach from Gerry Fleming four weeks ago, the Capitals secured a 4-1 victory at home against Bolzano yesterday – still without newcomer Scott Kosmachuk and with a roster severely depleted by injuries – thus getting back on the scoreboard after three losses.
In their regular season matchups against the Red Bulls, Vienna has come up short twice so far: 1-3 at home at the end of September and 3-4 in overtime in Salzburg in mid-October. Nevertheless, Salzburg doesn't always find it easy in Vienna; the capital city team has won three of the last five encounters on Viennese ice.
Statement Manny Viveiros

"We're not panicking. This team isn't the same as last season. Scoring goals isn't working well right now, but we have the quality in the team and we need to keep going in the right direction. We have confidence in the locker room and I'm sure success will come."
