Even though the Tyroleans are currently second-to-last in the standings, they are always capable of surprises, especially at home, and can make life difficult for any opponent. The Red Bulls aim to counter Innsbruck's counter-attacking game with a solid defense, build a strong offense from there, and hopefully bring home three points from Innsbruck.
Statement Mario Huber
Background
The Red Bulls have a bye this Friday, giving them the opportunity to recover somewhat and prepare as best as possible for their away game against Innsbruck on Sunday. Head Coach Manny Viveiros noted some fatigue in his team after their 2-5 loss to Graz last Wednesday, following seven games in 15 days, though he didn't deny the Styrians' good performance. Against the Tyroleans, Salzburg aims to be fresh and ready to attack; their goal remains to return to the top six, and they need every point to achieve this.
On paper, Innsbruck, second to last in the standings – the Red Bulls are in 7th place – is the underdog. However, Salzburg isn't paying any attention to this and is approaching the match with high concentration, as the Tyroleans have consistently proven themselves to be giant killers, both in the past and this season. League leaders Ljubljana have already experienced this twice this year (!), and just on Wednesday, Klagenfurt also suffered a crushing 6-9 defeat in Innsbruck.
Offensive on equal footing
With 53 goals conceded, the Red Bulls are among the strongest defensive teams in the league; only Graz, with just 51 goals against, has the best defense. However, in attack, Innsbruck (9th place with 60 goals) and Salzburg (8th place with 62 goals) are almost neck and neck. A major contributor to the Tyroleans' success is Steven Owre, who, with 13 goals, is not only Innsbruck's top scorer but, along with T.J. Brennan, also the second-highest scorer in the ICE Hockey League after Nicolai Meyer (15 goals).
Philipp Wimmer could return
The Red Bulls' roster is showing signs of relief. Philipp Wimmer has recovered from his long-term injury and could make his comeback on Sunday in Innsbruck. It would be the first league game of the season for the defenseman, who last played on August 31st at home against Bremerhaven in the CHL. Ali Wukovits, Lukas Schreier, and Peter Hochkofler are continuing their comebacks.
