Playoffs round of 16 Champions Hockey League
The Red Bulls struggled to find their rhythm and were already down 1-3 after the first period. They improved significantly in the strong second period and briefly narrowed the gap to 2-4, but Ingolstadt remained a step ahead and capitalized on the Red Bulls' penalties. Tyler Lewington and Lukas Hörl scored Salzburg's goals. The second leg will take place next Wednesday, November 19, in Salzburg (Eisarena Salzburg, 7:15 p.m.).

Game Summary
It was a straight-ahead affair. In the 2nd minute, Ingolstadt's Chris Jandric hit the post on a counterattack, and four minutes later the high-pressure hosts took the lead. Riley Barber fired into the top corner from mid-range (6th minute), leaving Salzburg's goalie Atte Tolvanen blind. The Red Bulls, with returning Devante Stephens, also played offensively, but initially struggled to generate dangerous shots on goal. Salzburg kept up the pressure and equalized. After a shot from Tyler Lewington, Ingolstadt's goalie Nico Pertuch made a save, but the puck trickled into the net behind him (14th minute). Ingolstadt responded with two quick goals. Philipp Krauß deflected the puck right in front of the net (15th minute), and less than a minute later, Myles Powell scored from close range shortly after the end of a power play to give the home team a 3-1 lead at the intermission, and they continued to create chances after the break.
... After the intermission, the Red Bulls regrouped and started strongly with high pressure and several good scoring chances. Right in the middle of Salzburg's sustained pressure, the home team was awarded a penalty shot, but Austen Keating's shot was saved by Atte Tolvanen (27th minute). The Red Bulls continued their advance, shooting from all angles, while Ingolstadt only managed occasional forays into the offensive zone. However, a power-play goal by Riley Barber (35th minute) extended Ingolstadt's lead once again, against the run of play at that point. Salzburg continued to dominate in front of the Ingolstadt net, but couldn't capitalize on their strong offensive performance in the second period and trailed 1-4 after 40 minutes.
Connor Corcoran scored a one-timer in the slot – the Red Bulls immediately resumed the pressure. And with a long-range shot almost from the blue line, Lukas Hörl finally scored his first CHL goal (43rd minute). Ingolstadt struck back immediately, with Philipp Krauß scoring from a rebound in the slot to give them a 5-2 lead (44th minute). Benjamin Nissner then had a good opportunity in the slot (47th minute). The game became end-to-end, with the pace remaining high. In the heated final minutes, however, the Red Bulls were slowed down by two penalty kills, and Ingolstadt capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play to score again. Riley Barber's shot from mid-range was unstoppable (54th minute). In the end, the Red Bulls suffered a clear 2-6 defeat and now need to make up a four-goal deficit in the second leg to at least keep their hopes of forcing overtime alive.

"It's frustrating. We simply took too many stupid penalties. Ingolstadt is undoubtedly a good team, but we're helping them with our penalties. It doesn't matter which league we're in, we need to play with more discipline."
