Highlights Red Bulls vs. EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV
The game recap
The game started with a lot of momentum. The visitors dominated the first few minutes of the game, but then the Red Bulls also got involved. As time went on, the chances improved. The Red Bulls regularly came close to Villach's goal with pace, where goalkeeper Joe Cannata kept his composure. VSV also pushed forward, but Elias Wallenta was stopped by a defender on a solo run (9th minute). Both teams alternated opportunities. Then the home side increased the pressure, established a foothold in the attacking zone, and fired off a flurry of shots. But even during Salzburg's first power play, Villach's defense held firm, so the score remained goalless going into the first half. However, the Red Bulls had a clear advantage in the closing stages.
After the break, VSV again besieged the Salzburg goal, where David Kickert now had plenty to do. After about four minutes, the Red Bulls also went ahead again, with Tyler Lewington having their first good chance in the slot (24th minute). Another intense back-and-forth ensued, with plenty of pace and drive towards the goal. The Red Bulls finally broke the spell on the power play, with Connor Corcoran hammering the puck into the net from the left face-off circle (31st minute). Shortly afterward, the puck hit the post twice after shots from Villach's Paul Sintschnig. But David Kickert stood his ground, also during Villach's strong power play that followed. In the 37th minute, Benjamin Nissner had Salzburg's next opportunity from a tight angle. Before the second intermission, VSV again stepped up the pace with their power play, and the Red Bulls survived several dangerous situations. Salzburg led 1-0 after 40 minutes, but the visitors were now completely on equal terms.
The Red Bulls immediately attacked in the final period, but the game quickly deteriorated into a nerve-wracking, head-to-head race. Lucas Thaler had a great chance to score again with a 2-on-1 (46th minute), and shortly thereafter, Florian Baltram also scored in the slot (48th minute). But then the atmosphere in front of Salzburg's goal became tense, with Villach playing a total of four minutes on the power play, but David Kickert was on the spot at the right moments. Florian Baltram had the decisive goal on his stick with a solo shot while shorthanded (53rd minute). But then a five-minute power play followed – Michael Raffl was sent off early with a game-misconduct penalty – and this time Villach equalized (58th minute), leading to overtime. Connor Corcoran struck again, the defenseman firing a long-range shot on the power play with 12 seconds left to give the Red Bulls a 2-1 home win. It was his second brace of the season.
