Starting position
The Red Bulls face an intensive program with three games per week over the next two weeks. Nevertheless, the focus is always on the next game and with VSV, Salzburg are up against a team that is currently on the upswing. Villach have been successful in their last four games and are fighting to catch up with the top half of the table in seventh place. Head coach Tray Tuomie's team won 2:1 on penalties in Graz just yesterday, setting a new benchmark.
The Red Bulls are expecting a tough game in the Villach Stadthalle, characterized by huge fan support, but also travel to Carinthia with a lot of self-confidence. Salzburg have won ten of their last eleven games in all competitions and were only beaten on penalties in Ljubljana at the end of November. Captain Thomas Raffl's men have also coped with a number of absentees and have thrived on a cohesive team performance. The Red Bulls lost 3-2 at home to VSV in their first game of the season on November 1st.
Players to watch
Villach and Salzburg are among the most offensive teams in the league with 85 goals scored each. Only Bolzano (88) and Székesfehérvár (86) have scored more often. A native of Villach and a native of Salzburg have played a major part in this, albeit at the other club. Maximilian Rebernig (born in Oberndorf near Salzburg) trained with the Red Bulls and has been playing in Villach since 2021, where the 24-year-old striker is currently the top scorer with 12 goals.
Lucas Thaler grew up at VSV and came to Salzburg in January 2021 after two and a half years in the Swedish youth team (Mora IK). The 22-year-old forward is on his way to his best professional season to date and, with yesterday's two goals in Feldkirch at the Red Bulls, has the most goals to his name with 15 (9 in the ICE Hockey League, 6 in the CHL).
