Starting position
On paper, the Red Bulls are the clear favorites against the Tyrolean Sharks. In recent games, both in the Champions Hockey League and in the domestic league, Salzburg have performed as a cohesive unit and have put some top teams in their place with their consistent offensive ice hockey. This has resulted in a recent run of five wins, which the reigning Austrian champions would like to extend against Innsbruck.
Tomorrow's opponent is quite different. Innsbruck are in second-last place in the table (Salzburg are fourth with fewer games than the rest) and suffered a heavy 6-0 home defeat against VSV yesterday. In the last six games, the Tyroleans have only managed to win once (three days ago in Asiago 6:5 after overtime), but were only beaten in overtime against Bolzano and Linz. The Tyroleans also lost the first game of the season against the Red Bulls a month ago in Innsbruck by 1:6.
Individual players can decide games
But caution is advised in any case, because the Tyroleans have the players who can score goals and decide games. Patrick Grasso is one of the best scorers in the league with 9 goals - as is Salzburg's top scorer Troy Bourke - only Pustertal's Brett Findlay has one more goal to his name with 10. Mark Rassell (7) and Corey Mackin (5) also know where the goal is.
At the other end of the ice, Innsbruck's number one goalkeeper Evan Buitenhuis is still one of the best in the league. The 31-year-old Canadian (3rd) holds a 92.8% save percentage. In comparison: Salzburg's Atte Tolvanen (8th) holds at 91.2%.
