Game report
The game began with both teams feeling each other out. As time progressed, the Italians got into the game a little better, but goalkeeper Valentin Ankirchner kept the Juniors in the game with strong saves. For their part, the Red Bulls remained dangerous on the counterattack. In the 13th minute, Leon Kolarik broke through after a pass from Lukas Hörl and gave the Juniors a 1:0 lead. The Salzburg team mastered a subsequent short-handed situation with ease. Towards the end of the first period, they tried to extend their lead, but Meran defended compactly and forced the Juniors to make mistakes.
At the start of the second period, the Juniors dominated and were given an overtime situation, but were unable to capitalize on it. Shortly afterwards, they had to play shorthanded themselves, but survived unscathed. With strong running play and fast combinations, the Red Bulls sought to extend their lead and put the Italians under pressure. Ankirchner prevented the opponents from counter-attacking, but in the 36th minute Nicholas Rein equalized for Merano 1:1 while short-handed. The momentum tipped in favour of the hosts, Ankirchner saved a penalty shot shortly before the end of the third and was able to defuse several chances for the Italians.
The Red Bulls started the final period with a breath of fresh air. The game became more physical and both teams fought for every centimeter of ice. In the 50th minute, Aaron Golser scored to give Meran a 2:1 lead after a feed from Riku Ishida. The Juniors increased the pressure, but just two minutes later (52') Teruto Nakajima extended the lead for the Italians to 3:1. Salzburg did not give up, and Alexander Rebernig - assisted by Daniel Assavolyuk - reduced the deficit to 3:2 in the 55th minute. In the final minute, the Juniors took goalkeeper Ankirchner off the ice for an extra outfield player, but were unable to equalize.
