Game report
The Red Bull Hockey Juniors got off to an extremely dominant start in the first period and put the Polar Bears under pressure right from the start. Fabian Baumann gave them a 1:0 lead as early as the 5th minute after a pass from Laurin Sandholzer. Zell am See only got into the game when they were outnumbered, but goalkeeper Valentin Ankirchner prevented the equalizer with strong saves. The Juniors had two powerplay opportunities later in the third period, but were unable to capitalize on them despite good chances.
The home side got into the game better in the second period. The physical and fast-paced game was now balanced, with both teams creating opportunities. Daniel Ban equalized for the Polar Bears in the 31st minute. The Juniors responded promptly: Paul Vinzens restored the 2:1 lead for the Red Bulls just 45 seconds later (32'). An intense battle for every centimeter of ice developed, with both teams having chances.
The start of the final period was unfortunate for the Juniors. The Polar Bears took the visitors by surprise with two quick goals: Maximilian Wilfan equalized in the 41st minute to make it 2:2, and one minute later (42nd) Bernhard Fechtig put the Zeller team ahead for the first time. The Juniors were unable to get back to their game, but held their own against the Polar Bears' offense. An overtime situation in the 50th minute briefly brought new momentum, but the hosts took control again after surviving a short-handed game. In the final two minutes of the game, Salzburg took goalkeeper Ankirchner off the ice for an extra skater, but Matt McLeod (59th) and Hubert Berger (60th) scored into the empty net to seal the 5:2 final score.
