Game report
The clash began at a high tempo. In the first few minutes, the Juniors had the better offensive actions. However, the reigning Alps Hockey League champions countered with physical play. Manuel Öhler scored the first goal of the evening for the Rittner Buam in the 8th minute due to a defensive error by the young Salzburg team. The Red Bulls tried to equalize, but the visitors were defensively compact. In the 17th minute, the Italians increased the lead to 2:0 through Ethan Szypula. In the final minutes of the first period, the game became really eventful again: Laurin Sandholzer reduced the deficit to 1:2 in the 19th minute. Only a few seconds later (20th), Alan Lobis restored the two-goal advantage. But the Juniors struck back and Luca Kogler made it 2:3 before the break (20th).
The second period started with this narrow deficit. Both teams tried to carry over the momentum from the first period and an open exchange of blows developed with chances on both sides. In the 29th minute, Philipp Krening equalized to make it 3:3 for the Red Bulls. Goalkeeper Valentin Ankirchner was in top form and kept his team in the game with strong saves. The Juniors also defended a short-handed situation with aplomb and were able to hold the tie until the second break.
In the final period, the Juniors started with a short overtime, but shortly afterwards had to play shorthanded themselves. In this period, Ritten managed to regain the lead through Alan Lobis to make it 3:4 (43'). This lead allowed the Rittner Buam to get into the game better and the Juniors struggled to find an answer. An overtime situation in the 52nd minute offered the chance to equalize, but the young Salzburgers were thwarted by the strong Italian defence and goalkeeper. In the final 13 seconds, the Red Bulls tried everything again with a sixth field player to equalize, but failed to do so.
