Christian Winkler, Managing Director Sports: "We are delighted for Vasili. At the same time, it is always an award for the entire organization. Especially for the coaches who have worked with him over the years. With the draft, he is now one of those who will be on the starting line and have the chance to prove himself in North America."
What happens with him now depends on the Buffalo Sabres. The forward has already flown to Buffalo and is taking part in an NHL club training camp there. Veit Oswald, the 19-year-old forward from Red Bull Munich and DEL Rookie of the Year 2023/24, has also been invited to an NHL training camp by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
13 academy players selected by the NHL
Vasili Zelenov is the 13th player to train at the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy and be drafted by an NHL club. This is the third time the Buffalo Sabres have secured the rights to an academy player; four years ago, German forward John Peterka was selected (34th) and in 2014 Vaslav Karabacek was the first academy player ever to be considered in the NHL Draft (49th).
