Game recap
The Red Bulls almost took their opponents by surprise with their offense at the start, there were several good shots on goal in the first few minutes and Salzburg took the early lead with the first power play (3rd). Troy Bourke was quick-witted in traffic in front of the goal and netted from close range. Only then did the visitors open up the game and immediately became dangerous, from then on it was back and forth at an extremely high tempo. In the 13th minute, Klagenfurt went on the counter-attack with two players, but were only just intercepted. Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen was also on the ball after that, saving two or three good chances and a penalty. The Red Bulls pressed in equal measure and got themselves into position with good combinations. The visitors then equalized, Nik Petersen's shot after a short solo run through the defence luckily curved over Atte Tolvanen and into the goal (17'). The KAC then had a chance for more in the powerplay, but after a fiercely contested first period, the score remained 1:1 at the break.
The Red Bulls continued to press in the second period during a powerplay, and a little later Lucas Thaler had a chance from an acute angle, but shot over (24'). And then the KAC took the lead, Lukas Haudum scoring with a low shot from an obscured view (24'). The game continued with incredible power from both teams and intense duels. The Red Bulls then had two overpayments in succession, but shortly afterwards the KAC took advantage of a chaotic phase and increased the lead to 3:1 with Paul Postma's goal against a Salzburg defense that was briefly disbanded (33'). Klagenfurt kept the pressure on after that and forced Atte Tolvanen to make a few more saves. Benjamin Nissner finally had another good chance from full stretch after a 3-on-2 counter-attack (39'), but was unable to beat Klagenfurt's Sebastian Dahm. After 40 minutes, the Red Bulls were trailing by two goals.
In the final period, the KAC increased their lead early on in the powerplay, Lukas Haudum scored his second goal of the day to make it 4:1 (44'). The Red Bulls now threw everything forward, Nicolai Meyer shaved the bar from distance (45'), followed shortly afterwards by Ali Wukovits (47'). But then it became bitter, Benjamin Nissner had to leave the ice early with a 5-minute penalty in the 48th minute and Jan Mursak scored the next goal for Klagenfurt in the power play (49th). That was the preliminary decision, even though the Red Bulls went one better with Thomas Raffl's powerplay goal (57') in a final phase that continued to be characterized by penalties. In the end, the Red Bulls lost 2:5 at home in the second final game and the series is now tied 1:1 after wins.
