Starting position
The first eagerly awaited final duel between the two best Austrian teams in the ICE Hockey League after the basic round was, as expected, a close game at eye level, which was characterized by strong defensive behaviour at the beginning of the series. Unsurprisingly, both teams were already the strongest defensive teams in the league in the basic round with the fewest goals conceded - 104 by the KAC and 111 by the Red Bulls.
However, with 183 goals scored, the KAC also had by far the best offense. The Carinthians were unable to play to this strength yesterday. The Red Bulls are therefore once again preparing for an increased Klagenfurt attack in the second game, coupled with the desire for revenge, but also want to look for their own scoring chances from a secure defense. Incidentally, yesterday was Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen's third shutout of the season.
Only one goal for a change
Low-scoring games between Salzburg and Klagenfurt have been the exception rather than the rule in the past. Yesterday's 1-0 win for the Red Bulls in overtime in a postseason duel was the first in a playoff series. Before that, there had only been one 1-0 win in nine playoff series, with the KAC beating Salzburg in regulation time in the semi-finals on April 5, 2021.
It can therefore be assumed that yesterday's first final game in Klagenfurt was just a foretaste of a series that will not be stingy with goals thereafter.
