Course of the game
Bolzano's Christiano Digiacinto was dangerous in front of Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen for the first time in the 3rd minute. After an initial powerplay on both sides, the Red Bulls stepped up their attack and went in search of the Bolzano goal. The home side, meanwhile, tried to send the quick man forward from defense. However, the South Tyroleans also started to put more emphasis on attacking, so that it was soon up and down at high speed. Overall, there were still few real chances, but Bolzano's Connor Ford made the most of one shortly before the break to take the lead (19'). He scored with a farmer's trick, with Atte Tolvanen having to keep a second attacker in sight. After 20 not yet too intense minutes, the home side, who were somewhat more active at the end, led 1:0.
The exchange of blows became more intense in the second half. Dustin Gazley (22') shot freely from half-distance, in return Troy Bourke tried in front of Bolzano goalie Sam Harvey (23') and Dennis Robertson with a hard blue-liner that just missed (25'). In an increasingly heated atmosphere with fierce duels, the home side secured the second goal on the powerplay (28'), Dustin Gazley finding the gap from close range. Only then did the Red Bulls regain more control of their own attacking play and were dangerous in front of goal, but a tight Bolzano defense made life difficult for them again. Towards the end, the game was increasingly interrupted by unsightly actions and penalties, with Salzburg's Cameron Schilling having to leave the ice early with a 5-minute+time penalty. And the South Tyroleans took advantage of this to score their third goal, making it 3:0 after 40 minutes in the powerplay.
After the break, the Red Bulls defended for another three and a half minutes short-handed. And continued immediately, Mario Huber reduced the deficit to 1:3 in the powerplay (46'). Salzburg pushed on and now played incessantly in the offensive zone. In between, Atte Tolvanen saved the dangerous Bolzano counterattacks at intervals. And then Paul Huber deflected Benjamin Nissner's long-range shot (53') to make it 2:3 and suddenly the equalizer was within reach again. In the final five minutes, the Red Bulls played as if they were in the power play, with several shots missing the goal by mere centimetres. But even with six field players, the equalizer was not to be achieved this time. The Red Bulls lost 2:3 after a strong final third with a final scramble, which meant that Bolzano tied the series at 2:2.
