Game recap
The Red Bulls with the better start. Nothing compelling yet, but already good first dangerous approaches to goal. Lucas Thaler went straight to goal from the face-off (4th), Bolzano goalkeeper Sam Harvey also stopped the subsequent rebound shot. The visitors were soon in the game, however, with Brad McClure shooting over the bar directly in front of Atte Tolvanen's goal (6'). Shortly afterwards, Bolzano took the lead with the first power play, Connor Ford scored with feeling with a backhand from an acute angle (7'). The Red Bulls continued to control the game and had a number of rebound chances near the goal line. Benjamin Nissner then had the next top opportunity at the right post from close range (14). The home side remained dominant until the break and also won many duels, although the score of 0:1 after 20 minutes did not reflect the course of the game.
The visitors initially pressed at the start of the second period, but the Red Bulls took control again for the most part with Ali Wukovits' good shot from close range (4th). But the Italian defense stood firm, even with the good shots from Lucas Thaler (6) and Drake Rymsha from half distance (8). And then the momentum shifted back and forth, with Bolzano establishing themselves in the attacking zone at times and posing a real threat. Benjamin Nissner tried again from an acute angle (37'), Chay Genoway with a shot from distance (38'). However, the visitors scored their second goal just seconds before the second break (40'), Dustin Gazley was on hand to tap in a rebound. After an even second period, the visitors led 2:0.
After the break, the Red Bulls pressed immediately and had a lot of possession, but the spaces were tight and only a few dangerous shots reached the goal. Peter Hochkofler had the best chance so far while short-handed after a one-timer right in front of goal (46'). The Red Bulls worked relentlessly forward and created further chances, Lucas Thaler did not get through after a 2-on-1 (49'). Bolzano remained dangerous, always getting into the offensive zone quickly on the counter-attacks. Salzburg continued to play to close the gap, but were unable to find the net in two overpayments (from 51st and 54th) and had no luck in the final three minutes with six outfield players despite several opportunities. In the end, it remained a 2-0 defeat, with Bolzano taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
