Course of the game
The first game of the best-of-seven series in the Alps Hockey League play-off semi-final started with an evenly balanced up-and-down. The pace of the game then picked up and Cortina managed to put on the pressure. However, Vasily Zelenov was able to break free during this, but was prevented from finishing by the Italians. The Juniors did not let the subsequent overtime opportunity go to waste: The young Salzburgers rotated in the attacking third and Kalle Myllymaa converted Vadim Schreiner's pass for a 1:0 lead in the 11th minute of play. The game became more physical and both teams created strong chances, but the goalkeepers were not beaten in the first period.
The second period started with Cortina being outnumbered. However, the Juniors survived the 2+2-minute penalty from the first period brilliantly - also thanks to the strong goalkeeping performance of Simon Wolf. Shortly afterwards, the young Salzburg team had another overtime. It was once again Kalle Myllymaa who converted Vadim Schreiner's pass to make it 2:0 in the 25th minute. The Italians tried everything to score the equalizer and once again created dangerous chances thanks to their superior numbers. However, the Red Bull Hockey Juniors' defense did not concede a goal in the second period either.
The final period was initially characterized by a fast game with many changes of direction. Every inch of the ice was fought for and played hard. Accents in offense were defused by a compact defense. Cortina then managed to increasingly take control of the game. Although Simon Wolf made some strong saves to prevent the team from scoring again, he was beaten by Tommaso Traversa in the 51st minute. The S.G. Cortina Hafro gained momentum and fired shot after shot at the Salzburg goal. With the sixth man on the ice, the Italians positioned themselves just one goal behind in the Juniors' third. Four seconds before the end of the game (60'), Marco Sanna finally scored the equalizer to make it 2:2.
In the ensuing overtime, Cortina put the Juniors under enormous pressure right from the start. However, goalkeeper Simon Wolf kept his team in the game and the young Salzburgers found their way back into offensive action. Both teams then took it in turns to create dangerous scoring chances. It was not until the 76th minute of the game that the home side managed to put on a spell of pressure thanks to an overpayment situation. However, another penalty on the Italian side meant that this ended shortly afterwards in a four-on-four and consequently an overtime game for Red Bull Hockey Juniors. However, Salzburg's strong power play also failed to score the opening goal. The first overtime ended without a goal.
In the ensuing 3v3 overtime, the Juniors were able to take control of the game. Cortina remained cautious, waited patiently for their chances and countered with a quick transition game. In the 98th minute (!) of the game, Julius Ramoser finally scored the redemption goal for a 3:2 away win in the third longest game in AHL history after a pass from Lukas Hörl.
