Game recap
Regardless of the sporting situation, the visitors from Vienna put up a spirited fight against the Red Bulls right from the start. Nevertheless, the Red Bulls took an early lead. Thomas Raffl (4th) surprised Vienna goalkeeper Stefan Steen in a 2-on-1 with Benjamin Nissner and scored from an acute angle. The game continued on an even keel and Salzburg goalkeeper David Kickert saved the visitors' first top chance a little later (9.), Zane Franklin suddenly found himself alone in front of goal. The game continued to go back and forth, remaining at eye level. Florian Baltram and Ryan Murphy (15) missed the next goal on a counter-attack, but Luca Auer then managed it, converting the rebound after a Tim Harnisch shot to give his team a 2:0 lead. David Kickert was then on hand to save a solo shot from Rok Ticar, who was still under pressure (17'). The home side took the lead into the first intermission after a strong game below the numbers.
After the break, the Capitals piled on the pressure. However, David Kickert did not allow himself to be beaten on several good opportunities. And then the Red Bulls struck again. Luca Auer passed right into the slot behind the goal, where Nicolai Meyer scored his first goal in his third game. Five minutes later, the Dane himself laid the ball on perfectly and Florian Baltram only had to shoot in flat in front of goal (33'). Vienna goalkeeper Lorenz Widhalm - the 20-year-old Viennese replaced Stefan Steen, who retired injured at the end of the first period - had to reach behind him for the second time. Salzburg were now in control of the game and did not let Vienna's attacks get them out of their depth. The score at the break after 40 minutes: 4:0.
In the 42nd minute, the disc just missed the half-open Salzburg goal. However, the Red Bulls immediately switched back into attack mode and quickly created further chances. But the visitors were not idle either and reduced the deficit to 1:4 (48') with a goal by Zane Franklin from half-distance. Only a short time later, the Red Bulls restored the gap with a 3-on-1 picture-book attack, Ryan Murphy netting in conjunction with Tim Harnisch and Mario Huber (49'). Benjamin Nissner then scored the sixth goal (53'), cleverly shooting at the goalie from the side and deflecting the shot into the net. That was also the final score, the Red Bulls won clearly and deservedly by 6:1. As Székesfehérvár also won their game in Ljubljana, the Red Bulls remain in third place in the table ahead of the final round.
