Game recap
The match in Bruneck started an hour late due to weather-related travel problems for the referees. Both teams played at eye level for a long time, but the Red Bulls had more of the play and were slightly more pressing in offense. They had the best opportunities during a good power play from the 13th minute onwards, in which Pustertal goalkeeper Jacob Smith did a good job. The home side then used a 2-on-1 counter-attack to take the lead (16'), with Dante Hannoun leaving Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen no chance with a one-timer under the crossbar. The Red Bulls had significantly more shots, but trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes.
Florian Baltram was sent 'on his way' by Tyler Lewington in his 100th game for the Red Bulls shortly after the restart (22'), but found his master in Jacob Smith after a solo run. Five minutes later, shortly before the end of two consecutive power plays, Mario Huber netted from the right face-off circle with a wrist shot to equalize the score at 1:1 (27). The game then gained in intensity and the duels became more aggressive. The chances also increased and both teams took it in turns to get good shots on goal in a fast up-and-down. Bruneck's Arvin Atwal converted one of these from the half-high slot in heavy traffic in front of goal to give the home side the lead again (36'), and the score was 2:1 at the break after two periods.
The intense game continued in the final third. Salzburg pressed for the equalizer, but Pustertal increased the lead to 3:1 after a rebound goal by Rick Schofield (44.). The Red Bulls controlled the game overall, but were repeatedly disrupted early on and had to watch out for counter-attacks. In the 52nd minute, Atte Tolvanen prevented the home side from taking a bigger lead when Matthias Mantinger was outnumbered, and just a few seconds later Peter Hochkofler deflected Dennis Robertson's pass into the net to make it 2:3 (52'). An open exchange of blows followed with chances on both sides, but the Red Bulls were unable to force an equalizer even with six field players and ultimately lost 3:2 in the last game of the basic round.
