The starting position
After three consecutive away defeats, the Red Bulls returned to winning ways yesterday with a 4:1 victory at home against Villach, impressing with their aggressive field hockey and enthusiasm for the game. Salzburg want to bring this quality to the ice again tomorrow against the Hungarians and, ideally, knock them off second place in the table with a win.
The Hungarians also have their sights set on second place and defending it, as the first two places after the basic round entitle them to participate in the CHL 2024/25. After 14 defeats against the Red Bulls over the course of the season, the Hungarians ended what they see as an 'unserie' with a 4-2 home win in their last game in Székesfehérvár on 12 January and could now draw 2-2 in the direct season duel with the Red Bulls.
Both teams on the up
The Hungarians have won four times in the last five rounds, consolidating their position after losing five in a row before that. The Hungarians won their last game last Tuesday at home against Villach 3:2.
With yesterday's home win against Villach, the Red Bulls scored again after three games without a win and finally showed a good chance conversion, after they were the better team with the clearly stronger shot ratio in the last defeat on Tuesday in Linz, but had to admit defeat in the penalty shootout.
In terms of the current goal difference - Salzburg +22, Székesfehérvár +21 - both teams have a similar goal difference. However, with 136 goals, the Hungarians have scored 16 more times than the Red Bulls.
