"Close your eyes and hope for the best"Atte Tolvanen and his empty-net goal // win2day ICE Hockey LeagueThe recent 3:1 win against Steinbach Black Wings Linz was worth seeing in itself; in a duel between two evenly matched teams, the Red Bulls narrowly prevailed and were also able to thank the outstanding performance of Atte Tolvanen in Salzburg's goal. But that wasn't all, the 29-year-old Finn crowned the game when he flicked the disc away from his own goal in the final minute and tucked it into the opposing goal - Linz's Rasmus Tirronen had long since made way for a sixth outfield player.

Incidentally, it was the second time for Tolvanen. On December 7, 2018, he scored this way in the NCAA derby with Northern Michigan University against Michigan Tech University, final score 5:3.

Atte Tolvanen is the fifth goalie to accomplish this feat in the win2day ICE Hockey League, formerly Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. Among them is Thomas Höneckl from Schwarzach, who scored the empty net with VSV against Innsbruck in 2012. On paper, there are even six goalkeepers in the goal statistics, but Innsbruck goalie Adam Munro was only awarded the goal in 2014 against Linz after an own goal by the opposing team.

By the way: What almost went under the radar on this extraordinary occasion was Peter Schneider's hat-trick and third 2-goal-game of the season, which paved the way for the Red Bulls' success against the Upper Austrians. The 32-year-old goal scorer now has 17 goals this season, only three strikers have scored more in the league so far.
