After a short warm-up phase, the Swedes initially took control of the game and forced the Red Bulls into the defensive zone for a long time with a lot of pressure. Salzburg's goalkeeper David Kickert held the first really dangerous shots of the home side even when shorthanded, but then could not prevent the 0:1 after a long solo through the defense of Rickard Hugg (11.). From the 13th minute, Salzburg also played offensively and recorded the first top chances; Benjamin Nissner and Mario Huber on the power play (17th) and Paul Huber after a solo in the shorthanded (18th). However, Skellefteå's goalie David Rautio kept the Swedes' lead after 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Red Bulls had collected themselves and played with good physical play at eye level. Nevertheless, the home side increased the lead after a rebound goal by Oskar Vuollet (24.). The Swedish vice-champion then became more pressured again, Salzburg rarely came into its own in front of goal despite good individual actions. Skellefteå's Martins Dzierkals then scored in a shorthanded situation after a 2-on-1 counterattack (37th) to put the hosts ahead 3-0 at the break after 40 minutes.
Again, the Red Bulls started impulsively into the third, but were not compelling enough in the conclusion like Troy Bourke from close range (42.). David Kickert distinguished himself with many saves, especially when shorthanded, while the Red Bulls continued to try everything forward and also created occasional chances. However, David Rautio was not to be overcome in goal and the final point was finally set by the Swedes with the fourth goal (56th), Pär Lindholm scored in the power play and thus fixed the 4:0 final score from the Swedish point of view.
Salzburg forward Florian Baltram
"The Swedes are skating very strong and have used their chances. Unfortunately, we didn't. It was a tough game in which they didn't give us much. We should have made it much harder for them."
